Blackjack Rules: How to Play The Game

Blackjack is the most widespread casino game in the world. Also known as Twenty-one, Vingt-et-un or Pontoon, Blackjack is overwhelmingly popular due to the fact that it is a game that exists in a grey area in between games of skill and games of chance and success in it depends not only on mere luck but on player’s deftness as well. The precursor of Blackjack was "Twenty-one", a game of unknown origin. When this game was first introduced in the USA it wasn’t popular and gambling houses did their best to attract players to the tables by offering various bonuses. Among such bonuses was a 10-to-1 payout if the hand of the player consisted of a black Jack (either the Jack of spades or the Jack of clubs) and the ace of spades. This hand was named a "blackjack" and players began to call the game so despite the fact that the bonus payout was soon abolished. According to the present blackjack rules, a "blackjack" may not necessarily contain a jack or any black cards at all.

When the game starts the dealer deals out two cards to the player and two cards to himself. The player’s cards are normally dealt face up, while the dealer has one face down and one face up. This face up card is known as the up card or the hole card. The two cards the player is dealt by the dealer at the outset play are called an original hand.

The object of the game from the player’s standpoint is to beat the dealer. The dealer basically has no object in his play; all he has to do is simply follow the blackjack rules established by the Casino Reviews. The player can beat his opponent in two ways. The basic thing is that he or she should have a total that is higher than the dealer’s total, or he or she must have a valid hand, of whatever total, while the dealer goes “bust”. When either a player or a dealer has taken cards to his or her original hand and gone over 21, the hand is considered to be a losing one for he or she has busted. The only valid hands are those of 21 or fewer points. Once the player busts, his hand is out of play and his bet is removed. It doesn’t matter to this player if the dealer subsequently busts his own hand; once the player busts, he loses.

The highest total the player can get on an original hand is 21; an ace and a 10-value card. In case a player (or dealer) gets this hand, it’s called a blackjack or a natural. Usually blackjack pays 3-2 if it wins. All other winning hands are paid even-money. When the dealer has a blackjack and none of the other players have it, the dealer wins all bets of the players; he doesn’t get any bonus.

20 is the next highest total. It is rather strong hand and as a rule a winning one, being it the dealer’s or the player’s hand. Thereafter, the hands go down in value. You should remember that neither a player nor a dealer can bust on the original hand.

If the player and the dealer have the same totals in their respective hands, it’s a tie, a stand off. In casinos the tie is termed a “push”. Here neither the player nor the dealer wins.

For blackjack a standard deck of 52 cards is used; single deck is quite rarely used nowadays, mostly multiple deck game is in favor. For blackjack the suits of cards are disregarded and what is important is the value of cards. You can get to know about the value of each card in the next section.
